Subject: A Scientific Mind. Good old Clarke!
Subject: A Scientific Mind. Good old Clarke!
I love reading this collection of 25 short stories with a theme in science. Admire the genius and creative thinking of Arthur C. Clarke. But not all are of equal standards. A few I would rather ignore.
The author putting "The Nine Billion Names of God" as the flagship of the 25 short stories is no accidental act. I without hesitation choose it as the best. The ending paragraph is just stupendous. Spoiler here: The suggestion of the dark night sky with its countless stars snuffing out one by one in quick succession strikes fear into my heart. A gasping nightmare of gigantic proportions.
A good contender for 2nd place is "The Star" placed last in the collection. Last but not least. Reading it through, and realizing the full lurking tragedy helps one to view a past event in a totally opposite perspective. Follow the Star of Bethlehem! That's what the 3 Wise Men did. Oh, how little they knew ...
